History: Spiral, born Nathan Gram, has fought professionally, on and off, since 2002. During his childhood, his parents refused to allow him to compete in any type of sport, preferring him to focus on academics. It wasn't until he left college in 1996 that he became interested in martial arts. He began with karate, then transitioned to Muay Thai. In 1998, he relocated to Germany and began studying Keysi Fighting Method in Hamburg under Rouven Siegele. He attained the rank of Master in the year 2001 and moved on to BJJ under Joachim Hansen.
The sport of MMA was still not embraced by the general public, so in 2001 Spiral started training to become a professional wrestler. In 2002, he made his debut for RWA. He competed there for two years before joining Pro Championship Wrestling in 2004.
For three years, Spiral was a featured wrestler for the Louisville-based promotion. He held several championships, including winning the World Title twice. He primarily feuded with Grade until 2006, when he met newcomer Jackson, beginning a long running feud between the two. Spiral created a match of his own design called the Terrordome. Three of these matches occurred in PCW.
When PCW closed its door, Spiral followed Jackson to HiWF in order to continue their feud, which had grown beyond their on-camera personas. His stint in HiWF was short-lived, but during his time there he attained the HiWF Tag Team Championship with Kalifornia and won the Last Man Standing tournament. His feud with Jackson produced the only Terrordome match to occur outside of PCW. Both men suffered severe injuries during the fight. It was unclear who won, until an unconscious Jackson was rolled over, showing him holding the briefcase which signaled him the winner.
Spiral's fighting career was interrupted when his wife was murdered in 2007. Though he was considered a person of interest by the lead investigator on the case, Detective Alexandra Dupin, charges were never filed due to lack of convincing evidence and a solid alibi. However, the State attorney general, Charles Foti, was certain that Spiral was the killer, and argued at the New Orleans parish court that he suffered from severe mental illness which made him a danger to himself and society.
The deck was stacked against Spiral. The state called numerous psychiatrists, psychologists, and character witnesses who recounted stories of Spiral's erratic, and often dangerous, behavior. Mike Nash, a fellow wrestler who also worked for PCW, told several stories indicating that Spiral had a hard time "turning it off," referring to his inability to drop his on-camera persona once the show was over. This often lead to altercations with other wrestlers outside the ring.
In the end, the overwhelming testimony compelled the judge to rule in favor of the State of Louisiana. Spiral was involuntarily committed to Ascension Asylum for the Mentally Ill in Ascension, Louisiana.
Spiral procured the services of a legal team consisting of an all-star cast of attorneys from several areas of expertise, such as criminal, and psychiatric laws. His lawyers successfully argued that he was no longer a threat to himself or others, convincing the judge to release him from the hospital's care. The judge ruled in partial favor, ordering Ascension Asylum to release the patient, but ordered that he must continue to see a state-appointed psychiatrist every week for a year. Failure to do so and the court will order him to be recommitted to psychiatric care.
Once freed, Spiral fled New Orleans with a large sum of money. After he failed to meet his psychiatrist, a bench warrant was issued in New Orleans parish for criminal contempt. He was missing for over a year before finally being apprehended in Russia in late 2010 by INTERPOL on suspicion of ties to the Vory V Zakone, the Russian Mafia. It was rumored that he was taking part in illegal cage fights across Europe. While being held by INTERPOL, the US Attorney successfully had Spiral extradited back to America, where he was sent directly to Louisiana to face his Contempt of Court charge. The judge immediately ordered him back to Ascension.
In 2016, Spiral's case was brought before the appellate court. His lawyers convinced the judge that their client's treatment was little more than "forced imprisonment," citing that has never been charged, let alone found guilty, of any crimes. The judge ruled in favor, and Spiral was released that day.
Days after his release, he was approached by UNLEASHED and offered a contract. He accepted and immediately returned to training. He initially joined Greg Jackson's world famous gym in New Mexico, before signing on to train and teach at Grade Fighting System in Louisville, KY, owned by former PCW rival Grade. Spiral competed in UNLEASHED, where he was crowned World Champion. before the MMA promotion collapsed.
After failing to adhere to the terms and conditions of his release, Spiral was once again sought by the State of Louisiana. He fled the U.S. and disappeared somewhere in Europe, where he remained hidden while his legal team fought the case in court. In early 2019, Spiral’s legal team successfully argued for his release before a federal magistrate, freeing him to return to America.
Past Accomplishments: Spiral has held tag and singles titles at ever level.
Wrestling Style (Power, Striker, Brawler, etc): MMA-inspired Striker/Grappler. Spiral is a cage fighter. He attacks with his hands and fists equally, and always with purpose. He doesn’t attack without a plan. Hitting an opponent fifty times is pointless when a calculated, well-placed hook can send a foe straight to the canvas. He is also a ground-grappler, always looking for an arm to break, a joint to manipulate out of place, or a neck to squeeze shut. Though known for his brutal striking ability, he is a submission artist at heart.
Ground Moves:
Ground and Pound
Arm locks, i.e. Armbar
Leg locks, i.e. Heel Hook
Chokes, i.e. Rear naked
Standing Moves:
Suplex Variations, i.e. Overhead belly-to-belly
Sweeps and Takedowns, i.e. Double Leg
Various hand strikes, i.e. Jabs, Straights, Hooks, Haymakers, Uppercuts, Elbows, etc.
Various kicks, i.e. Calf kick, Roundhouse, Brazilian kick, Knees, Stomps, Soccer kick, Liver kick, etc.
Running Moves:
Basic running moves.
Aerial Moves:
Spiral avoids acrobatics unless it involves dropping someone from a great height.
Signature Moves:
Dirty Tactics, i.e. Low Blows, Biting, Eyepokes, Headbutting, etc.
Finishing Move(s): (No more than 2)
The Spiral Effect - Inverted Fireman’s Carry into Knee Strike. Spiral lifts his opponent across his shoulders, face up. He then throws the opponent overhead. As the opponent falls to the ground, Spiral delivers a knee strike to the back of their head.
Go Back to Sleep - A triangle choke which can be implied both on the ground and standing. Laying on the canvas, Spiral will lie and wait for his opponent to attack him, at which point he will wrap his legs and apply the choke. He also performs a jumping variation, where he leaps into the air, wraps his legs and controls the wrist of his opponent, pulling him down.
