A butterfly flaps its wings in Chicago and a tornado occurs in Tokyo.
Time, as its perceived is linear; everything moves in a straight line no one singular decision going unpunished in the ever shifting, yet forward moving notion that is time. Life itself is at the mercy of time and timeline, age pulling us ever closer to the point where the line just… stops. That is the most common understanding of how time works, that shifts and turns exist only in that forward moving motion; you cannot change the past.
No use crying over spilt milk is a common phrase in regards to this theory; but there are others, usually populated by science fiction or ‘horror’ genre TV Shows and movies, theories that suggest time moves in waves, that if you find the right points? The potential to crossover timelines not only exists, but is a very real threat.
In Keeping with this theory, characters and script writers are quick to remind us that such actions have consequences, that you cannot simply slip through time. Touching and changing whatever pleases you, without there being some fallout; thus, the birth of the chaos theory. The Butterfly Effect.
These are the thoughts that keep our intrepid traveller awake, tired and itchy eyes peering out across the old dirt roads as The Commodore barrels down the tarmac; it seems pretty deep for a fun loving and adventure having Galactic Princess, but lately she's been plagued by the idea that Krahe and Munin aren’t on the same path she is; not in the good guy, bad guy kinda way - but almost as though their consciousness itself is from a stream different to hers.
Just something about that damn Butterfly…
”You've heard of the butterfly effect, right? That if a butterfly flaps its wings at just the right time in just the right place. It can cause a hurricane thousands of miles away. It's chaos theory, but see, chaos theory isn't exactly about chaos. It's about how a tiny change in a big system can affect everything.”
He wants to be the good guy, the anti-hero. The problematic saviour of the world. He has to believe it, that there is a deeper meaning. A point to all of the erratic inactions that force him to take action… Zacharia Krahe imagines a cape beneath those impeccably pressed suits. And maybe he believes that you can see it.
A soft plume of smoke drifted from the end of a golden colored pipe. Long like a witches finger denoted in a halloween depiction and just as crooked. The end of the pipe resting against a plump, blue lip as the rotund and wriggling caterpillar rested atop a comically oversized leaf.
This fat old caterpillar was making a lot of sense dudes, even with a monocle shoved against what probably isn’t supposed to be such a human looking eye and a jaunty little top hat that sat a little crooked on his head; maybe he thought they made him look distinguished? But really they look kinda comical and an urge to giggle sat permanently in my chest… But I'm getting off track.
Think about the butterfly, fragile and yet so powerful.
The problem is, I have been my buds. I’ve been thinking about that damn butterfly since the first time I saw him in the cafe… Since she called me that; a name no one has used for me in so long I almost forgot it existed - a name that my father christened me with the first time he saw me try to fly... Most people? They think a butterfly is about beauty.
But not them.
Woah okay so caterpillar dude can maybe read my mind? Idk.
He looked up from that ridiculous leaf a puffed another plume of smoke in my face; it smelled like those old fruit candies that grandmothers keep in the bottom of their purse; thinking about it, the pipe was probably a vape… Hipster caterpillars man.
You’re focusing too much on the why and not on the who. Be they from your timeline or another, you’re quickly approaching the collision course and understanding the purpose of the crossover isn’t important right now; figuring out who’s ahead of who won’t be what helps you beat him… And you do want to beat him, don’t you?
Duh.
I mean, thats a real obvious question, don’t you think? I like the guy and all but this is business and i’m not about to give up a spot in this Pillars thing just cause I kinda like them both… I don’t know about their timeline, but mine for sure has me in that match; I just need to figure out the how.
You can do this, you have always been able to do this… You wandered a little from your path, young princess. But this is your chance to get back on track. No foxes and no Zombies.
Zombies. Another curious case, people don’t see her; just like the don’t see the butterfly. But she’s special, more special than anyone else in this whole place. Do her family know that? Locking her away from the world and trying to control the gifts that the universe provides… It seems almost a perversion of justice that she is a caged animal.
I know why the caged bird sings.
But that one is a tale for another day.
And I guess the caterpillar agreed with that sentiment because he was slithering down that giant leaf and getting closer. The thick stalk that seemed to attach itself to a giant leaning sunflower about a foot away, bend and gave to his weight; that giant form leaving a slick, sticky trail on the surface of that leaf as he inched closer and closer. I hadn’t noticed before how small and tight his mouth was, a harsh line almost as though it had been sliced haphazardly into his flesh to allow him to speak.
He leered close and that sweet fruit smell turned to something akin to a rotting orange left on the windowsill in the sun, that bright sunflower began to weep and droop as he made his way from his leaf until he was at my feet, pushed up on his fat little butt to stare me dead in the eyes.
Much like the Caterpillar… Butterflies do not feel pain. Butterflies know when they are touched, their nervous system does not have pain receptors that registers pain. They can survive without abdomen, partly broken wing.. A broken heart.
See, he gets it.
Everything that you think you feel, every loss, every torque of a limb… It’s learned behaviour little butterfly. The only time someone can hurt you, is if you let them hurt you. If you grant them the power over you.. You are so much stronger than you know; so much more than even you have given yourself credit for. The people, the fans… They see your potential and your greatness. Capture the stars that curl within your hair, wrap your hands around the corners of the universe that prick the surface of your skin… You can beat him Indi Rhyder.
You just have to try.
Well that last part is a little bit offensive let me tell you. Try? TRY?! All I’ve been doing is trying, working, improving… Rome wasn’t built in a day buds and legacy or not - I still had a lot to learn in that ring and one man who knows that? Is Krahe.
That caterpillar leered closer still, I couldn’t help it. Before I could tell my feet no? They were shuffling back to avoid contact with his wet, slimy looking skin. Is it skin? Minute scales formed to appear as a single moving organ? Anyway, he looked damp and he smelled like orchard waste and I wasn’t about to find out why.
Slithering his form away, he returned to the leaf, butt first he affixed his body to the underbelly of it and curled up, turning in on himself until only two far too human eyes and a little top hat could be seen, his eyes seemed fixed on me as his body began to harden and change.
If caterpillars could laugh, he would be chuckling right then.
Just think of your mind as a movie, you can pause, rewind or slow down any details you want…
And with that, he turned into a fat, blue cocoon.
Chaos is the science of surprises, of the nonlinear and the unpredictable. It teaches us to expect the unexpected. While most traditional science deals with supposedly predictable phenomena like gravity, electricity, or chemical reactions, Chaos Theory deals with nonlinear things that are effectively impossible to predict or control, like turbulence, weather, the stock market, our brain states, and so on. These phenomena are often described by fractal mathematics, which captures the infinite complexity of nature. Many natural objects exhibit fractal properties, including landscapes, clouds, trees, organs, rivers etc, and many of the systems in which we live exhibit complex, chaotic behavior. Recognizing the chaotic, fractal nature of our world can give us new insight, power, and wisdom. For example, by understanding the complex, chaotic dynamics of the atmosphere, a balloon pilot can “steer” a balloon to a desired location. By understanding that our ecosystems, our social systems, and our economic systems are interconnected, we can hope to avoid actions which may end up being detrimental to our long-term well-being.
Or to put it a little simpler? Even the most simple and seemingly irrelevant event? Can have dire consequences
”I gave you each a butterfly, I hoped that you would see. I made an effort, to show you who I was beneath the grand show, to peel back the curtain and offer you honesty where others see only the mask. And in turn, you said nothing. You looked upon me like a curious uncle, never veering close enough to see what is underneath.
I like you, both of you. But in your failings Krahe, she sees the light. She is your grace and your guidance and maybe, maybe my dude she will turn you in the right direction just in time. But that doesn’t seem to be in the cards and you don’t strike me as a lucky guy; fortune may favor the bold but it seems to scoot past you as though you are a leper… An unfortunate turnabout for your antics outside of the ring.
But me? I may as well be married to Lady Luck herself. I always seem to find something just as I need to find it and today… Well today I found the truth beneath my very nature. I figured out why they cheer so loudly for me, but shun people like you. I am the light, I am the Galactic Princess.
I am the Butterfly.
And you… Have no power over me.
Two Butterflies went out at Noon—
And waltzed above a Farm—
Then stepped straight through the Firmament
And rested on a Beam—
And then—together bore away
Upon a shining Sea—
Though never yet, in any Port—
Their coming mentioned—be—
If spoken by the distant Bird—
If met in Ether Sea
By Frigate, or by Merchantman—
No notice—was—to me—
