It was nearing the end of the three day trip and Dakota knew that now it was time to step back to business. She’d just finished the third helping of arancini and had decided to retire up to hers and Cross’ bedroom for the evening, the purpose? Firstly, to watch the stream of NSFW’s promo, secondly, to burst into tears.
Was it real? Was she actually letting this pressure get to her in such a way that she was actually going to cry? Was this business beginning to affect her so much that she couldn’t function without turning into a nervous wreck? It had been no secret that she had gotten into the business to make money, the rest, including Cross, had just been a really nice bonus. Now, in less than a week, a referee’s three count could put a stop to all that, because as far as she was concerned, for every promotion out there, there was really only Valor. To not have Valor was a thought that every time she tried to comprehend she would begin to feel that rushing in her chest that could either be a panic attack or a heart attack.
She was being stupid, she knew that much. Drying her eyes, she took her cellphone out of her jean pocket and thumbed through the contacts until she reached “Dad”. Pressing the call button, she held the receiver to her ear, waiting three rings before a familiar voice said hello.
”Daddy!”
”Babygirl! What’s up? Haven’t heard from you for a little while, how is the new home?”
She answered that the new home was going brilliantly, if she could just figure out what to use one of the spare bedrooms for. Then it happened again, that rush in her chest. Trying to stop it, she carried on speaking, taking deep breaths between each sentence.
”Can you believe it? Next week, I might not even be employed by Valor, I mean, what am I supposed to do with myself?” She said with a slight laugh, trying to make light of a situation that, at that very moment, was tearing her to bits. Her dad, of course, always had a sensible answer for everything.
”Look, I know I don’t struggle financially and I know I probably never will, but I am genuinely scared I’m going to lose this job, I don’t want to relocate to another company. I certainly don’t want a different schedule to Cross. Dad, what do I do? I mean, I’d drive a truck off a pier if it meant keeping my job, but someone kinda beat me to that.” She said with another chuckle.
”You’re not going to lose your job, ‘Kota, I have faith that you will find a way out of this situation, I mean, have you tried apologizing to Ms Byrne?”
”Yeah, when have you ever known me to back down, Daddy?”
Robert replied with a sigh, then he said something that surprised her a little.
”What’s this I read about Cross proposing to you? Why did I not know about this before it showed up on social media?”
”It was a lie, Daddy, I wanted to see if twitter would lose it’s mind over that revelation…..One person wished me congratulations and it’s someone I don’t even work with. Call it a failed experiment, nothing more.”
”I’d say it worked! Did your opponents not mention it? Meaning that you’re in their head. That’s the first step to beating someone, ‘Kota. You’ve got them talking about you and trying to undermine your confidence, that shows that they are clutching for straws against you and Cross. They’ve gone down the route of your potential unemployment and you batted it to the side like it didn’t matter.”
”It kinda matters though Daddy. I give it all the I don’t give a damn attitude, but deep down, I’m terrified. At the end of the day, this job keeps food on my table and I’ve made some good friends there. Jeez, if Cross knew how much of a nervous wreck I am about this, he’d tell me to stop being stupid but that’s not what I need to hear right now.”
”’Kota, I hate to tell you this, but I agree with him, you’re being silly. If there’s one thing I take pride in, it’s that my daughter is intelligent and will always find a way out of any predicament, even if it’s one that her silly actions landed her in!”
Dakota laughed at this, sticking her middle finger up at the phone, knowing her father couldn’t see it.
”Dakota, you’re a smart girl and you’ll find a way out of this predicament, in fact, I’m gonna pop down the betting shop and put a hundred dollars on you and Cross retaining, I am that confident. And let’s say you lose? Go join another company, heck, put on a mask and reinvent yourself.”
Dakota laughed, that sort of belly laugh that you just can’t resist and this just caused her father to burst into laughter himself. Cross called from downstairs, wondering what had just happened, but Dakota could just about manage an “Everything’salright” in one quick word before she had to change the subject.
”How’s mom?”
”She’s good, apart from the broken toe, stubbed it on that table, you know, the one that is basically a block of granite.”
Against her own wishes, Dakota laughed again, echoed by her father again as an audible “smack” could be heard on his end of the line, no doubt Jennifer Jennings, slapping him upside the head for laughing at her misfortune.
