Nobody really knew how Cosmo Cooper was getting through all of those long flights and long fights. The cold water hit him in the face the day before his big match at Rite of Kings, and he knew what everyone else knew. On paper he was the underdog. The chances of him actually retaining his championship was slim to none. Only one person knew what Cosmo’s morning routine looked like, and that was Riley Savell. Most of the time, Riley was asleep as she was this morning as Cooper trudged towards the bathroom and looked at himself in the mirror. With blurry eyes he turned on the cold water and ran his hands underneath before splashing it on his face. With his head down and water dripping back into the large sink.
Without even looking to where his hand was reaching, soon a rattling bottle was in his hand and the lid was uncapped. Two pain pills were in his palm and then downed quickly with only a small sip of water pouring from the sink. It had become so much of a routine for him now, he didn’t bother to even look to see where they were or what they were called. All he knew was those little miracle pills was why his shoulder didn’t hurt anymore…
But that’s the thing. Cosmo hadn’t complained of his shoulder because it had healed, his addiction had not. Nothing had spiraled out of control… yet. Nobody knew he was eating these for breakfast every morning unless they spied on him in his own bathroom no matter where he went, but the grasp of addiction had planted its roots within Cosmo’s body. All he knew, every morning, was to take two of those and he wouldn’t have any pain.
As Riley rustled in the bedroom Cosmo did take a glance up to the medicine cabinet and put the pain pills back behind the multi-vitamins and foot cream where it was quite hidden, and then he shut it again to look at his own face which looked slightly more alive than it was before. He had stood here a lot in front of the mirror and tried to talk himself up or down… depending on the day.
“No, you shouldn’t get back into an MMA cage, you’re falling apart.”
“Yes, you should take some time off, you’re falling apart and need the rest or you’ll be dead by 40.”
“You don’t need these pain pills every morning.”
“Yes you do.”
Today was no different as it was his last day before a day off for travel to Egypt and then it was back training for Elite FC’s first event where The Apex Champion was the poster child… and then was back to Kings Road to face Lauryn Wolfe and… the road never ended.
It was what he asked for as Apex Champion, so todays message?
“You can do it.”
And with that, he tugged a loose RAW Athletics t-shirt over his torso and pulled his hair back in a messy ponytail.
More work was to be done.
