It felt like he had swallowed an ice cube and the bitter cold had traveled from his mouth and into his veins. The moment Cosmo let Riley Savell’s hand go, the world seemed to go dark. The park was picturesque, including a pond with an arching bridge that they had walked over. A passerby would have sworn them as in love. At a distance their words looked sincere, the fire that blazed for one another in both of their eyes with a simple turn and glare could have burned the entire park to the ground and nobody would have blamed the power couple. The meeting didn’t end with a kiss to the lips or cheek, but instead a gentle turn by Riley, and a hard step by Cosmo as he walked towards the entrance, from which they had walked.
At a distance, it would have looked like they were wordlessly mouthing each other about how in love they were. Cosmo would turn and lean his hands on the rail with his head down, Riley would pace gently back and forth as she continued looking down at her feet. The flower that Cosmo held in his hand would twirl like a feather into the water and barely break the glass-like surface. A fish would come up to nip at it and that would draw his attention away for the moment. When he looked back up and the two lovers made eye contact the decision had been made. They held hands for the moment, a few nods of agreement like some unspoken oath and Cosmo Cooper would turn away from Riley Savell for the last time.
That was when his entire body was shrouded in ice, the moment he had let go.
When Cosmo and Leela Watts split it was a much different feeling for him. Cooper still felt like he needed to be her protector, he knew she felt vulnerable and he tried his best to protect her. Riley was different. From the moment they had become an item he let her be independent, he let her fight her own battles, and even now in probably their worst moment as a couple… he was going to let her figure it out her own way.
Cosmo Cooper would not look back, only ahead.
A breath of wind on his neck could have been the universe telling him to turn around and go get the girl. Flowers waved frantically to try and get him to turn around but he held his eyes steadily forward for the exit. The wood of the bridge they had stood on groaned with age in the silence, and not even that call was enough to get him to turn around.
On the other side of the exit was what he loved anyway. Wrestling. Competition. In sports they taught you something crucial. You had to play with amnesia. One bad play couldn’t hinder the next. One bad play would not hinder his ability in Valor Pro Wrestling as the Apex Champion. His spot at the top of the game didn’t change, but for once in his life at the top of the wrestling industry.
Cosmo would have to do it without Riley Savell at his side, but he refused to look back.
