May 3, 2015. Galveston Island Wrestling was holding one of its annual supershows, Exile, on Stewart Beach in Galveston, Texas.
Chris Callum fought twice that night. He was the walking triple crown, after all. That was what was expected of him.
He remembered Aspen Chaud standing backstage before the first match, his television title defense. She was so proud of him. Two belts on his shoulders, one belt around his waist. The look she gave him… he had never been looked at like that before. She was looking at a man that she had hand picked to become the face of GIW. Someone she could build around for the future. He loved the way she looked at him.
Tonight was the night that he showed the entire promotion that he was unstoppable.
Then he lost in a four way match. A lapse in focus. Then… one, two, three.
The walking triple crowd was over, so soon after it began.
Aspen was furious. For the first time she was furious with him. Disappointed. Let down. Her shining star wasn’t shining so bright anymore. She told him that she could protect him in his other title defense later in the night against Alexis Terry. He told her to stay in the back.
Later came. The Deep South Championship was on the line. He stood against Alexis Terry and fought hard. Then Alexis pulled out brass knuckles.
Crack. Thud. He didn’t remember much after that. Alexis won the title. He watched the tape back and saw Aspen quivering over him in the ring, blood stains on her dress. She looked like Jackie Kennedy.
He liked that. He liked knowing that someone out there was concerned about his health.
His jaw was broken. He would be out for the foreseeable future, though he would be rushed back to the ring to defend his last title, the Undisputed Championship, a little over a month later.
Aspen changed after that. She never took a risk with him again. She had contingency plans for contingency plans. Everything was executed as expected. All allies carefully vetted.
As for Alexis… he hated her. Of course. There was no redeeming quality to the woman. An aging drug addict. Best years behind her.
But then Aspen brought her into the fold in Galveston, and it worked. Alexis distracted Bronx Valescence long enough for Callum to deal with other issues. Then she played big dividends all the way to the end. He never liked it, but she was a big part of his success.
Then CWC came around, and Alexis was brought into the fold by Callum as a promoter. She did well. She worked well with him.
Part of Callum appreciated the lengths Alexis would go to in order to win a title. Cracking the jaw of a rising star? That was as low as low gets. But he also hated her for it.
And now Aspen wants her back in the fold again. He trusts her. He trusts her planning. If Aspen Chaud says Alexis Terry is an asset, then she is an asset. The question is… what does Alexis get out of this?
Fame? Fortune? Titles? Maybe she just wants to go out on the road again for some fun.

He has to trust the process. He has to trust in Aspen.
If he doesn’t, what does he have?
