"SHADOW."
Brennan finds himself struck with a mysterious disease called... CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT?! How will he ever survive?
★BRENNAN DEVLIN
“Mom?”
MAMA DEVLIN
“Brennan! You came...”
BRENNAN DEVLIN
“Yeah uh, I didn’t really think I had much choice I mean… pop’s dead. Kind of have to.”
MAMA DEVLIN
“I guess so, I know you both fell out, especially after that girl of yours tried to blow him…”
BRENNAN DEVLIN
“That was for a wrestling angle it doesn’t count, mom!”
MAMA DEVLIN
“Sure dear. How is she anyway?”
Brennan grew quiet, realizing he had a lot of things to explain in that regard, though he was uncertain of where to begin.
BRENNAN DEVLIN
‘She’s uh, gone… pretty sure interdimensional ninjas took her. There’s a paper trail, she even disappeared off of my Twitter header…”
MAMA DEVLIN
“Sure honey, I’m entirely certain that’s what happened…”
BRENNAN DEVLIN
“Why does everyone keep talking like that?”
MAMA DEVLIN
“Nothing, just usually when ones significant other vanishes it’s…”
She spoke with a hint of concern, still kind to him in spite of him having pretty much left her life. She leaned against the door frame and started to continue as he cut her off.
BRENNAN DEVLIN
“Because of aliens, I know.”
MAMA DEVLIN
“No honey.”
BRENNAN DEVLIN
“Anyway, you gonna be alright mom?”
MAMA DEVLIN
“As good as can be expected, I’m taken care of. By the way, someone named Brenda came here the other day and said she was leaving her stuff in your room, kept calling me mom and threatened me with a sword.”
BRENNAN DEVLIN
“That Brenda she’s always… in character? She’s something.”
MAMA DEVLIN
“Anyway, you want to come in? The rest of the family and I are going to head to the funeral later, we’d be happy if you came with us.”
BRENNAN DEVLIN
“I’m uh, I’m gonna check some things out first, visit some old friends, then I’ll definitely catch you all at the door.”
He played it calmly, not getting into too many specifics as he went through a number of pleasantries with his mother, and a goodbye. He would of course see her later for more awkward chatter at least.
Right now, he had to confront his past.
He had to go to one of the places he’d visited when he came here to introduce Ramona to his parents prior to Boardwalk Wrestling. Brennan wandered up to a bench, the sun beaming down as he sat alone and sighed.
BRENNAN DEVLIN
“So, I know we visited here when I introduced you to my parents, even told you I was one day going to marry you right around here.
And now you’re not here, and I am. Honestly, I don’t know if I’ll ever live up to who we were together. We were Ramona and Brennan Devlin, and it never mattered which way we were announced, because you were always number one to me. The whole time we were together we were in eachothers shadow and I think that bothered you but…days like today I miss the shade.”
He talked to himself, glancing around to see if anyone was noticing, but nobody was there.
BRENNAN DEVLIN
“Now I have to go slap around some idiot who thinks he has my number because shit hadn’t went my way, and I know if you were here, you’d support me but…
I don’t know, maybe you moved on and went back to heaven with all the other members of the Christ family. But I’m still here, still fighting and… I really miss you being here because you always knew what to say to encourage me. Shit didn’t go my way and you’d figure out a way to push me in the way I needed to go.”
He stood up and stretched, letting out a sigh soon after.
BRENNAN DEVLIN
“I’ll never be as good as me and you were… But maybe, maybe when you decide to come back, wherever you are, maybe you’ll be even more impressed at just how good I can be on my own. But now I have to go deal with a funeral and you really should be here after that time you tried to seduce my dad, do you know how many weird looks I'm going to get?”
He turned away, focused and began to wander off. In the distance, a shadowy figure observed from behind the trees, watching his every movement as he left the area.
