The world was a cruel place at times, a fact that Kaven Drell was more than aware of. Beyond that, it was a fact that he found himself reminiscing about as he stared intently at the lovebirds who were seated on the couch directly opposite of him. Deep within him rumbled an immense sense of loathing for his long time friend, Danny Rizzo, and his girlfriend Leela Watts. Individually he respected them both and admired them to a certain extent. Together, however, they disgusted him. The romance. The attraction. All of it was a distraction. A distraction from purpose. A distraction from the cause. Their cause. His cause.
For too long he had watched the underprivileged, the rejected, the downtrodden be trampled upon by those who saw themselves as the elites. He despised the have’s when it came to how they interacted with the have nots. For a man who had had everything taken away from him as a child, a victim of the system to a certain extent, he burned with hatred for any machine that bore any semblance to the one that had chewed him up and spit him out.
But perhaps there was more to the intensity with which he despised seeing Danny and Leela together. Perhaps there was a modicum of jealousy. Jealousy toward Danny for finding something, or someone, in the pretty Leela Watts who personified the phrase “girl next door.” Maybe it was simply irritation that she could be problematic for what he had planned for both himself and for his friend Daniel. Or, maybe, it was that he saw potential in her and saw her once again choosing to waste it being the counterpart, the sidekick, to another man. Even if that man was the UnYielding champion. Even if that man was his closest friend. His only friend.
Staring intently at the two of them, Leela caught his gaze and shifted uncomfortably under it. Clearing her throat, she stood and excused herself, disappearing into the room that she now shared with Danny on a regular basis. Rizzo, on the other hand, simply turned toward him and spoke with an even voice.
“What is it, Kaven?”
Drell stared at him intently, fire burning in his eyes as he did so. Something was off, though he wasn’t sure what it was. Was it weakness that he could sense? Was Danny’s resolve wavering? He wasn’t sure.
“You know what needs to be done.”
The two stared at each other, one hard stare matching the other, for long moments before Danny finally broke.
“Don’t worry about it. I’ve got this.”
Nodding his head, Drell leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.
“Good. There is so much work left to be done. A new chapter begins.”
Together they had dealt a blow to the machine that Kaven despised so much. But there was still so much left to do. Their work had just begun and he would not let anything, not even his own best friend, get in the way of ensuring that it reached its completion.
