“There are four things every person has more of than they know: sins, debt, years, and foes.”
Siberia Zombie stands on the edge of the two story brick building and looks behind her. Her blue hair blows to the side letting her one blue eye target Smokey Mayfield standing behind her. Siberia nods to the street motioning for Smokey to come forward and join her.
Smokey looks behind him, and noticing that there are no other candidates, adjusts his tie to get himself together and slowly steps up closer to the edge of the building still keeping some distance from her. Siberia has her hands inside her tracksuit pockets in order to calm his nerves.
“We can control three of those things somewhat. Although no matter what you do sometimes, there is always some chain around your feet.”
Smokey lets himself relax with a laugh.
“Well shiiieeet, good thing we ain’t got one of those.”
He gets down dropping to his hands and knees startled at the sound of chain hitting the ground. Siberia smirks and points down to the street where Kowloon Zombie chases three men out of an apartment building. He whips the chain at them. It looks like he is intentionally missing as he lets them get away. Kowloon makes enough sound to get them to run when they are cut off by three initiates on the sidewalk. The three initiates have shaved heads and wear grey school uniforms. They catch their prey and tackle them to the ground. Kowloon walks up and joins in on beating the men with the chain wrapped around his massive fist and forearm. His glee echoes up to the roof where Smokey watches in horror. He looks down the street where other initiates are dragging and beating other men and women out of cars and windows.
“Riiight. So what’s going on here?”
Siberia gives him a look that says he should already know this.
“Justice. When the new Emperor, Naruhito, took power he pardoned 500,000 people of their petty crimes. While we understand that this is customary we just cannot let these thieves and vandals get away with it. They need to feel the weight of what they have done and know the pressure they put on society. We’re going to take this out of them through pain and fines instead of time.”
Smokey looks down at Kowloon and yells out as he puts a man through a store window. The other two criminals take out their wallets and throw money at him. The initiates pick it all up as Kowloon walks down the street to continue his rampage. Smokey’s surprised expression when he let out the yell remains frozen on his face as he turns to Siberia.
“What the hell?! You can’t just go out and do- “ He shuts up as Siberia takes out her hands from her pocket to reveal bloodstained wraps covering them up. “Actually go right the hell on. You can do whatever you want. I bet that guy deserved it. What did he do? Steal a box of cereal to feed his family? Fuck ‘im.”
Siberia nods and faces him.
“Has anyone ever told you how funny you are? If we let the small things pass we might as well let the big ones pass too. Everyone has their debt whether they know it or not and one day solicitation will come for them in some form. These people are lucky we are doing this. The law has failed them so we are stepping in to balance out their karma. In doing this we are teaching them and purifying our own spirits.”
Smokey gets back up forgetting the righteous scene down below to glare at Siberia with some indignation in his eyes.
“Alright, I guess you will hear it from me. This isn’t right. This is so far on the other end of the spectrum of right that wrong ain’t even covering it. This is leftward. This is leftwrong. You can’t just go out and beat people up because they drew a penis on the wall for a li’l chuckle.“
Smokey looks down in dismay as Kowloon spanks a teen with the chain in front of their distraught parents. Siberia ignores the scene and walks up to him. He steps back so she puts her hands behind her back.
“You obviously do not understand what debt is. What these people owe is a moral debt to society even if they were officially pardoned.”
Smokey forgets his nerves and gets right in her face.
“What about you, Elsa? I bet you got some bad juju on you. Nobody is innocent in this world. How come you don’t look inward, you frigid bitch? Afraid what you might see in that cold heart of yours, huh?” He flinches when Siberia turns to face the street again in one swift motion. “Heeey, best friends, right?”
“You’re right. I realize we are not exempt from debt either. I am not so much a victim anymore. Once I took control of my life and started making those that have done wrong pay up, I started incurring debt as well. I will possibly pay one of these back in about a week’s time. Did you see when we threw Lady Munin off a roof?”
She looks down at a spot on the street picturing a pool of blood on the pavement. Smokey thinks and nods.
“Yeah, I know all about that. I told Cosmo you people crazy.”
Siberia shakes her head.
“Don’t use that word. I get it that you’re not a fighter, but you should know by now how we operate. This is a part of the life. When I came to Valor I wanted to make a name for myself, by myself. I think I achieved this as I am still the top ranked fighter on here. The only reason that I am not fighting for a championship next week is that things got… complicated.”
“Yeah, I’ll say. You got distracted by the d-”
Siberia stomps her foot to get Smokey to shut up.
“I only wanted to compete. I had always been a part of a team. I don’t know if I was lonely or what, but I got close to someone. Then was a clash of interests. A friendship blossomed into a rivalry which then bloomed into a blood feud. This ended with that blood being spilled after we threw Lady Munin off the roof. It continues now that she has returned and is coming for me directly. The time for run-ins and match interruptions is over. Lady Munin made her intentions clear. Now it is up to me to oblige her. I owe her that much and I will let her get her proverbial pound of flesh.”
Smokey rubs his chin for a moment and his managerial side takes over.
“What, so you just gonna let her beat you up? I don’t think she was being very poetic when she talked about the pound of flesh. I think she really wants to cut bits off of you.” He leans back and points at her butt. “Cut some bacon off your backside.” He dodges a swipe of her hand and gets closer. “Really mess you up.”
Siberia crosses her arms in front of her and breathes hard for a moment not believing that he is getting to her.
“I am going to take full responsibility for what we have done. That only means that I will meet her in the ring for a fair fight. That is the only thing I owe her. I will give her a chance to do what she must to get her justice, and she better be satisfied with that. It will be an insult to her and this very profession if I just lie down and take it. I will confess that I have some guilt over my hand in everything. I needed to control things in a more tactful manner. Things got out of hand, however, when Zachariah antagonized us.”
Smokey stares at her incredulously.
“And whose fault is that?”
Siberia turns away from him and takes a few steps on the edge.
“I know what happens when you play with fire, but I refuse to melt. I am up for this fight, and while I may give Lady Munin her shot at revenge, I will not be taking this lightly. She isn’t so innocent herself. What of the reason that she set her man loose on this organization? She might have been a player wanting to pull the strings from afar, but things were much harder than she anticipated. There are a lot of forces in Valor that aim to control what it is and if they cannot then they even aspire to destroy it. Lady Munin was no better than any of them. This is all a power move on her part to establish herself as a major force in that struggle. I must not let this happen.”
Siberia comes back at Smokey with all doubt gone from her mind. She pulls him up by his tie to stand on the edge with her.
“I am not contradicting myself when I say that I want to take control of my own life. My dealings in Valor show this. I chose to come here alone. I allowed my family to follow. I did not object to Lady Munin’s fall. I am glad that we did it. It cleared an obstacle in our path and a whole lot of baggage off my back. Not that they returned she wants to cling onto me again in much the same way that she clings onto Zachariah. Do you see the way she talks? That is a woman that is used to being in control. With this chance at satiating her hunger for control I will leave a bitter taste in her mouth. I’m not going to be their plaything. I will show him that-”
She pauses and Smokey puts his hands up.
“What? Don’t leave me hanging. Tell ‘em!”
Siberia winds the tie up in her hand and coldly lets it all out.
“I am going to show him that I am better than her as I did with Brodie.” She let’s go of Smokey and pushes him back. “I suspected there was more to him behind the scenes. Now they confirmed what I suspected. I am not only going to free myself from her need to control, but I will also absolve him of the very same thing. I don’t care if he hates me for it even more, afterward, but I am going to this match not only to give Munin her due. I am going for a chance to redeem myself as well. Fuki can have her revenge on him in her own match. I am going to make things right with Lady Munin by sending her back into the role she is accustomed to. I want her to think hard after our match if she still wants to really return to the ring. It can be harsh out here for broken birds.”
Smokey nods at this.
“Well good, that woman is too fine to still be getting into tussles.”
Siberia shakes her head.
“And speaking of repayment, it is your turn to cover your debts.”
She places a hand on his shoulder and gives him a slight shove forward. Smokey rolls out of her grasp and stumbles back onto the roof. He scoots backward away from her.
“Get the hell away from me! I’m tired of this!”
Siberia walks towards him and he gets up to run to the door leading inside. He heads down into the building, not realizing that he can’t see in front of him in the pitch black.
