Leela angrily threw clothes into her suitcase. This birthday had not gone like she had hoped. The way she had really envisioned it going. She angrily wiped tears away from her eyes as she stuffed more things into her suitcase. She couldn’t believe Kaven and Danny. She felt like a complete idiot. She wasn’t supposed to feel like that with them. She wasn’t supposed to have the same sinking feeling she did when Cosmo lied and cheated. She knew about it and she let it happen time and time again because she had fallen head over heels for the illusion of LeeMo like everyone else. She had grown up though. She had learned from her past mistake. Really she had learned her value, and to trust her own instincts in situations like this.
Before today Kaven had an interesting conversation with Toby Wagner. One that Leela had read every word of and then had noticed an interesting like on one of the comments. Danny had liked a tweet about Kaven relying on his best friend to get him a decent girl. A tweet dripping with malic and taking shots at Kaven and Leela’s relationship implying that it wasn’t real or that he hated the entire thing. When she had talked to him and he had assured her things were fine. That they would be okay. Then Toby had implied Kaven was a third wheel to cause a problem. Kaven replying that causing problems was fun. So Leela assumed it meant their relationship wasn’t real to him.
The only reason Kaven was interested in Leela and what was going on was to motivate Danny to fight harder. To push Danny further to becoming the Apex Championship. In the end none of this was about them. None of this was about caring for each other. She was just another pawn in their stupid game. She had been a convenient little pawn in Cosmo’s game. Taking care of his Grandma when he couldn’t, being the perfect girlfriend with a smile always on her face. A good image to put out there for the world. Yet now? She started feeling like she was a sacrificial lamb in the endgame of Danny and Kaven, and she made it clear she wasn’t here to be anyone’s sacrificial lamb.
When she couldn’t fit anymore in the suitcase she slammed it closed. Stuffing clothes in so they wouldn’t get caught on the zipper as she closed it up. She set it down on the floor and began rolling it behind her as she walked out of the room and into the living room. Danny and Kaven were sitting on the couch watching TV. Both of their eyes found her and as if in sync they looked from her to the suitcase. The puppy she had gotten for both of them? That they hadn’t even named was chewing on a shoe on the floor. She rolled her eyes. At least it wasn’t her shoe.
“I can’t do this. I can’t escape this feeling like I’m being played for a fool by both of you. I felt like this before. With Cosmo. He lied straight to my face and I just accepted it. In order to show that I have really learned from my past mistakes? I’m showing that I’m not allowing myself to be lied to because it feels good just to be wanted. When I’m starting to question if I’m REALLY wanted or not.”
Danny was the first to move and stand up to come towards her. She put a hand up and stopped him.
“Don’t. You’ve done enough. Telling me shit was okay when it clearly isn’t to you? You think that in the end that makes me happy? No. I’d rather you be honest with me. Not lie straight to my face about how you really feel.”
She then turned to Kaven who hadn’t moved. He just sat there staring at her. She glared daggers into him.
“And YOU. You’ve made me believe that there was something here. That there was a reason for it. To talk Danny into this crazy idea and I can’t help but look at your words to other people and wonder if you’re playing me for an idiot. That I’m just a means to an end. Well I’m not a lamb lining up to be slaughtered by you two. I’ve let myself be chewed up and spit out long enough. Maybe if you two would have just been honest from the jump, but instead you’ve lied to me and been no better than Cosmo. I’m going to stay with my parents.”
Danny finally noticed that the puppy had been chewing on a shoe, and it was his shoe and he scooped it up and away from the shoe as he looked over at Leela. Even though she was angry to the point of tears there was something really cute about the image of him holding the puppy.
“Leela….”
“I said No Danny. I guess I should have known something was wrong when I bring you two home a gift and you haven’t even named it. I’ll see you two at 7 Pillars. Don’t text me. Don’t call me. Just leave me alone.”
Leela didn’t let Danny get another word out and she barely gave Kaven half of a glance before she stormed out the door and headed to her car. She gave one final look and saw on the balcony to the apartment Danny and Kaven watching her leave. For a moment she thought maybe she should have let them speak. Maybe she should have stayed but then the other voice in her head told her No. She was doing the right thing. If for no one else? Herself and that’s who she needed to be focused on. That’s who she had been saying all this time she would focus on. Time to prove it. She backed out of the parking lot and let the two watch her brake lights disappear down the street. Some birthday.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Leela looked at the table in front of her. The whole thing was decorated with the typical Halloween decorations. On the table was a half eaten jello brain, and an almost fully eaten human heart. Made of Jello of course. The table had spiderwebs and everything. In Leela’s hand was a trash bag. Her parents had wanted to clean the table up last night but Leela knew they had work today. So she had offered to do it for them instead before she left for the airport.
“This scene is looking all too familiar to me. I mean my dad sets this same elaborate, show up every halloween. The kids of the neighborhood love it. They talk about it and how they can’t wait to come see what my parents set up this year. That’s right. Leela Watts used to live in the cool house of the neighborhood when it came time for Holidays. Everything so dramatic and over the top. My mom makes jello shaped like brains and even a heart that she works extra hard to get the coloring perfectly accurate. In fact in the dim lighting of the night it looks real. Familiar is comforting to me. All of this makes me smile and happy to see. The kids loved it just as much this year as they do every year. I couldn’t have been happier than to have sat here and watched all their faces light up and what they seen.”
“This match at 7 Pillars is an all too familiar setting for me. The last time I was here I faced Poe Sauer. She was an interesting girl. She had the spooky, the crazed and demented look in her eyes and she was determined to make a name for herself all by herself. I have respect for anyone who just wants to make a name for themselves. We all want to do that in this business and it’s sad that only some of us ever really do make it.”
As Leela talked she made quick work of cleaning up the last remnants of Halloween from the Watts household. Throwing everything into the trash bag as she smiled towards the camera.
“It turned ugly with Poe really quick. It turned into a Grudge. She put my body through the ringer with the attacks and brutality she inflicted on me, but it wasn’t enough. I showed just how strong I am inside and out when I was the one who when it counted most was able to beat her. I ended the Grudge and Poe disappeared. Does this sound familiar? Because no offense Valor but I have Deja Vu. I guess you really believe in me that I can do it again. That I can end a Grudge against a demented mind such as Gia Van Zant. So much so that when I do I will get a shot at the Unleashed Champion.”
“I’m happy. There’s nothing more fitting for me than to show you all how I’ve truly broken free from the ties that once bound me than to be Unleashed. To show everyone that yes, people might throw everything they have at me. They might beat me down. Hurt me, but in the end I take it all and I push back even harder. I Unleash on them if you will. Gia. I don’t know what happened to your promo last time we faced. I’m going to blame some technical difficulty because I’m not one to quickly and harshly judge someone for being lazy.”
Leela sighed as she was finally finished with clearing off the table. She dropped the now full trash bag and threw her arms out to the side shaking her head as her attention went fully to the camera in front of her face.
“But of course you started off with talking about my relationships and how they somehow tie into anything with this match. I’m here. Just me. On my own. Danny and Kaven won’t be out there to help me, or to stop you from succeeding. It’s just me and you when the bell rings and it’s about focusing on the right things. Like the opportunity of a lifetime for you to ascend to great heights barely three matches into your solo run here. How you can take that back to your other company and show everyone that in spite of Tag Team Success you can do it on your own.”
“I hope that this time you realize that and you try not to focus on the things that don’t matter. It’s about me and you here. I respect you. You gave me a hell of a fight last time. I’m not underestimating what you are capable of in this fight either. Give me hell. Bring it all down on me so I can show you and everyone else that this truly is a new Leela Watts stepping into the ring. A fearless, fighting, unleashed woman who will stop at nothing to be back at the top. Who will endure everything to be there again. Help me Gia, and I will help show everyone that you are just as badass as you say you are. I just want this more. It’s nothing personal. You’ll do great things, just not before me. We’ll end this Grudge and We’ll show the whole damn roster we are a tough act to follow. See you at 7 Pillars.”
Leela grinned from ear to ear and waved before picking up the trash bag and walking towards the garbage cans at the other end of the yard. Letting the scene fade to black.
